On april 28th 2019, the “Parco letterario Eugenio Montale” invites 25 literature lovers for a special meeting aimed at looking at Cinque Terre with poets eyes.

The initiative, created by the Literary Park body, is one of the monthly meetings that will take place from April to October, to introduce visitors to a discovery of the beauty of Cinque Terre through Eugenio Montale’s writings.

…A highly emotional path, that Montale used to often repeat in his immortal lyrics

The Giant and the Poet

The poet who won the Nobel prize for Literature in 1925, was used to spend his summer vacations in Monterosso, in a villa he defined “pagoda giallognola” (yellow pagoda).

Montale’s childhood has been nurtured by Cinque Terre and through his whole life been on top of his mind, always there to suggest him wonderful verses.

Hi words were like paintings and melodies, like sculptures depicting immortal Cinque Terre atmospheres.

Travelling with Montale

The Parco Letterario Eugenio Montale organizes thematic days where visitors can walk the poets paths and admire the sights that inspired verses.

The April 28th event, named “Versi all’ombra del gigante”  (verses under the shade of the Giant) will be hosted by Carlo Torricelli, naturalist, and Cristina Currarini, expert on Montale, who will lead the participants through thoughts and emotions of the young poet.

It will be a brief, fascinating journey through the

le viuzze che seguono i ciglioni/ discendendo tra i ciuffi delle canne”,

(tiny streets that follow the canyons / slowly descending through the cane wisps)

Where the glances will be invited to

osservare tra i frondi il palpitare lontano/ di scaglie di mare”.

(observe through the fronds the distant beat / of fragments of sea)

A highly emotional path, that Montale used to often repeat in his immortal lyrics like “I limoni”, “La casa dei doganieri”, “Meriggiare pallido e assorto”.

A different way of feeling Cinque Terre, through the words of a poet inspired by this land and sea.

E andando nel sole che abbaglia
sentire con triste meraviglia
com’è tutta la vita e il suo travaglio
in questo seguitare una muraglia
che ha in cima cocci aguzzi di bottiglia.
